The Yvette Jelfs millinery courses are held at St. Ann's Bank House, just 10 minutes from Princess Street in the heart of Edinburgh. Built in 1710, it was originally the farmhouse for The Palace of Hollyrood House. With extensive gardens and spacious workroom, it is the perfect location for learning the art of millinery in a relaxed and inspiring environment. There is a conservatory with listed vines next to the workroom in which students can relax and take lunch weather permitting. Residential students will be provided with rooms, all with views of Arthurs seat of which they can take leisurely walks in the morning or evenings. Bed and breakfast as well as a light lunch are included in the price. A truly bespoke service awaits you as you learn the art of hat making and millinery. The course The courses will begin on Sunday evenings, with a dinner to introduce and get to know Yvette, and the people who will be studying with you. The courses will then start on Monday morning at 10am with a break for lunch and can carry on till 5pm. Throughout the week, the students can use a wide range of materials and tools to make their hats or headpieces. Such materials include ¥ Feathers - Prime ostrich, Spadones, Goose Quill, Pheasant feathers, Hackle and Biot, Lady Amhurst, peacock and other exotic feathers of which we will go through on the course. ¥ Felt, Sinmay, parisisal, paribuntal, polypropylene, visca, linen, cotton and various other fabrics which are used to block or trim with. ¥ Flowers - handmade using the original tools of the past flower makers, using silk organza linen cotton and poly organzas. Other millinery techniques that will be taught include; Making a sparterie headband: This is an easy-to-make, adjustable headband to measure and fit any hat. Making a small sinmay hat: This will give you a chance to create your own style of brim shape and size to suit your personal style. This will be created with or without blocking, depending on each individual design. Blocking in either felt or straw fabric, cones or cappellines either in an all one block shape or two piece (as in crown and brim separately) Trimming/hand made trimmings to adorn hats or hairdressings including silk flowers, feathers, cotton, linen, felt etc. Working with Veiling as in blocking French, merry-widow or plain veiling and how to use veiling as a trimming Pattern made hats:To learn to make your own patterns as well as the hat itself with various fabrics from silk to tweeds. Most areas will be taught by hand sewing but there are industrial sewing machines of which you will be taught to use if necessary. (mainly for pattern hats). The courses will be tailor made to suit your needs, and so we will need to know your level of understanding of millinery, if there are any materials you would especially like to use etc. so as to make your stay with us as productive as possible. A weekly course costs £1200.00 and includes bed and breakfast a light lunch. A chef can be brought in for evening meals if required. Edinburgh has a wonderful diversification of restaurants and places to visit all of which we can help you find. Day courses are also available to join on any day of the week. The cost is £150.00 per day and includes all materials and a light lunch. This is truly a bespoke service to learn the art of hat making and millinery, and we look forward to seeing you soon.
